Sun Protection Factor (SPF) Cream - the essential anti-aging product

The Essential Role of Sun Protection Cream

As part of the desire to have youthful and great skin, many individuals put their time and energy in sourcing and purchasing different skincare products that include creams and serums. Skin care products are very important, BUT often a crucial product that is often overlooked (particular during the summer months) is sun protection cream or 'factor' (aka SPF or sunscreen). Wearing SPF on the face is key to reducing lines and wrinkles on the face. However even more importantly is the need for SPF to protect possible exposed skin eg on back or stomach when walking around or if lying on a sun lounger in direct sunlight on holiday. With the use of an SPF (factor 30 or factor 50), exposure to the sun for prolonged periods or short periods of intense sun exposure, can cause some types of skin cancer in some people.

UV Radiation

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is a major contributor to skin aging. There are two types of UV radiation that affect the skin: UVA and UVB. UVA rays penetrate the skin more deeply and are primarily responsible for long-term skin damage, including premature aging. UVB rays, while less penetrating, cause sunburn and can contribute to skin cancer. Both types of UV radiation generate free radicals, which damage skin cells and lead to the breakdown of collagen and elastin fibers, resulting in wrinkles, sagging, and a loss of skin elasticity.

The benefits of using an SPF:

  1. Prevents Premature Wrinkles and Fine Lines

Regular use of sun protection cream significantly reduces the risk of developing premature wrinkles and fine lines. Sunscreen acts as a barrier that shields your skin from harmful UV rays, preventing the breakdown of collagen and elastin. By preserving these essential proteins, your skin remains firm and elastic, which is key to maintaining a youthful appearance.

  2. Reduces Hyperpigmentation and Age Spots

Sun exposure can cause hyperpigmentation and age spots, which are often difficult to treat once they appear. Sun protection cream helps prevent these dark spots by blocking UV rays that trigger melanin production in the skin. Consistent use of sunscreen can even out your skin tone, giving you a smoother and more radiant complexion.

  3. Maintains Skin Health and Vitality

Beyond preventing visible signs of aging, sun protection cream helps maintain overall skin health. UV radiation can lead to various skin issues, including dryness, redness, and inflammation. Sunscreen helps keep these problems at bay, ensuring your skin remains healthy, hydrated, and vibrant.

  4. Lowers the Risk of Skin Cancer

While the focus of this article is on anti-aging, it’s essential to note that sun protection cream also plays a crucial role in reducing the risk of skin cancer. Prolonged UV exposure is a leading cause of skin cancer, and regular use of sunscreen is a simple yet effective way to protect yourself.

Choosing the Right SPF

To maximize the anti-aging results and general protection from the sun, it is important to choose the right product. Here are a few tips:

  • Broad-Spectrum Protection: Ensure your sunscreen offers broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Also choose a sun protection cream with an SPF of 30 or 50.
  • Use a separate SPF that is made for the face and purchase a separate one for the body. The sunscreens that are formulated for the face overall are more gentle, lighter, and more easily absorbed.  Using an SPF for the body on the face could cause irritation or blocked pores.
  • Daily Use: Make sunscreen application a daily habit, regardless of the weather or season.

My absolute favourite brand for sun protection products is Ultrasun (visit QVC.com and type ultrasun) in the search box.  This brand has developed a wide range of high-quality products.

My favourite items from the range are:

- Ultrasun Sun Protection Anti-Pigmentation Face SPF 50+ 150ml (tinted) - non-tinted is also available.  This product has really helped to reduce the pigmentation on my face and has helped to even out my skin tone.

- Ultrasun lip balm SPF 30 - great hydration and protection for the lips.

- Ultrasun eye cream SPF 30 - lightweight protection for the delicate eye area.

Even though I have dark skin I use these products daily, even in the winter months!

Lightweight formulas for the face

In recent years brands have started to introduce light-weight formulas particularly for the face, referred to as 'face fluid'.  I still use the above Ultrasun products, but have included a face fluid specifically for my oily zones of my face (check and nose areas).  See below:

L’OrĂ©al Paris Revitalift Clinical SPF 50+ Invisible UV Fluid - lasts a really long time, as a little goes a long way and blends in quickly (great for darker skin tones).  It also recommends applying under the eye area.  This face fluid contains vitamin C, as it is said it enhances sun protection and can reduce sun damage to the skin.  5/5 and definitely a repeat purchase!

Ultrasun have recently brought out its own version of an SPF face fluid.

Final thoughts

If you are on a tight budget - no worries because shops such as Boots and Superdrug have their own sun protection ranges (of which I have used in the past and still purchase for use on the body).  Just ensure to buy one specifically for the face and one for the body.
